BOUTIQUE GUIDE ·

How to manage a boutique, step by step

Short answer. To manage a boutique well, keep one record per customer with their measurements, take every order the same way (garment, design reference, price, advance and promised date), move each order through clear stages, review what is due every morning, and settle the balance at handover. A boutique management app such as Atelier Elite keeps all of this together on your phone, in English, Hindi or Gujarati.

Keep one record per customer

Most boutique mix-ups start with scattered information: measurements in one notebook, the design on WhatsApp, the advance in a diary. Give every customer one record with their phone number, measurements, past orders and anything you have learned about their fit and taste.

Repeat customers are the heart of a boutique. When a regular calls for a festival outfit, you should be able to open their record and start without measuring again.

Take every order the same way

Use the same short checklist for every order, whether it is a blouse alteration or a bridal lehenga:

  1. Garment, fabric and who supplied the fabric.
  2. A design reference: a photo, a sketch or a saved screenshot.
  3. The measurements used for this garment.
  4. Price, advance received and balance due.
  5. Fitting (trial) date and promised delivery date.
  6. The occasion date, if there is one, such as a wedding or festival.

Track orders by stage, not by memory

Every open order should have a stage everyone understands, for example in production, ready and delivered. Look at open orders each morning sorted by what is due next, not by when they came in.

Wedding and festival seasons are when memory fails. A daily list of fittings and deliveries for the next few days catches problems while there is still time to fix them.

Plan fittings backwards from the occasion

Start from the date the customer needs to wear the garment. Put the delivery a few days before it, and the fitting early enough to finish alterations. Promise dates you can keep; a reliable date earns more referrals than a fast one that slips.

Keep money simple: quote, advance, balance

Agree the price before cutting, take an advance, and record every payment against the order. The balance should be visible on the order until handover. Record shop expenses too, so you know what each month really earned.

Keep customers and your team informed

Tell customers when the garment is ready or a fitting is due; it saves phone calls and missed pickups. Only message customers who have agreed to it. Inside the shop, make it clear who is working on which garment, so nothing waits for someone who is absent.

Do I need software to run a boutique?

Not on day one: a carefully kept register works for a few orders. As orders, staff and wedding-season deadlines grow, an app saves time searching for measurements and makes missed dates and forgotten balances less likely.
